But earlier this week, she wielded something with a bit more punch: Her fist, aimed squarely at the face of a black bear that was set on having her elderly dachshund for lunch.
“It had her kind of like when they eat salmon,” Collins said in a Reuters article. “I was freaking out. I was screaming at it. My dog was screaming. I ran up to it … I just punched it right in the snout and it let go.”
Collins reports that her boyfriend then scared away the startled bear. The doxie, named Fudge, was not badly injured, and is recovering nicely at home, she says. Collins is usually careful when letting the dog out to do her business, but she figures she just didn’t look around enough that time. She says she’ll be watching Fudge like a hawk from now on. (I hope not like a hungry hawk …)
Wow, that’s a woman who loves her dog. And that’s one lucky dog. The black bears in the Juneau area are getting into more trouble around town lately because the summer’s supply of berries has been low. The poor hungry bears have to eat something, so the wiener dog must have seemed pretty appealing.
Look at that little white doggy face above. She still looks like she’s a bit traumatized from her close call, doesn’t she?
