Just when life couldn’t possibly get any more stressful, you get kidnapped by a cab driver having a break with reality.
I’m in Orlando speaking on “Avoiding the Three Biggest Social Media Mistakes” at Maddie’s Fund’s day-long seminar on getting to no-kill. Last night, we all met for dinner, and I left a bit early to watch “Glee,” which I re-cap each week for MTV’s AfterElton.com and AfterEllen.com websites.
The guy who picked me up at the Gaylord Palms Hotel started ranting and muttering before we got out of the parking lot, but I thought he was on the phone. By the time I realized he was talking to the voices in his head, I was caught in a sort of weird paralysis. At first I thought he was just lost, as he kept talking about GPS satellites, but it became clear that he was blaming all kinds of things on the beams from the satellites, and from my iPhone, which I was trying to use to get directions.
I don’t know why I didn’t get out, to tell you the truth; I didn’t know where we were, for one, and we were driving fast. He didn’t overtly threaten me, and I felt from the sense of what he was saying that he intended to take me to my hotel, which he eventually did.
I jumped out, said I was going to call the police, and he took off.
And of course, I missed “Glee,” although I was able to watch it online later — too much later to write a full re-cap, so I just did a few fast paragraphs instead of my usual epic analysis. My editor was very understanding; he actually pivoted to “I’m so glad you’re all right!” almost immediately after gasping in horror that my re-cap might not happen.
Anyway, I have to go to my presentation now, and then I catch a late flight home where I finish packing and leave for my road trip to Michigan Saturday morning.
And after all, tomorrow is another day.
