It's True: This Dog and This White Lion Cub Are Best Friends

The Internet loves a good inter-species love story.

Meet Honey the dog and Kwanza the white lion cub, the Internet's two newest sensations. Despite what these pictures seem to show, they are the best of friends. They're just engaging in some major-league roughhousing, wrestling, and harmless mayhem. The bites from the lion are soft -- to hardy Honey, at least. To you it would probably feel like someone stapling duct tape to your arm and then ripping it off.

These two friends live at the Darling Downs Zoo in New Zealand, who filmed the pair playing and posted a must-see video (see below). Kwanza's mother reared the cub, but she stopped producing milk, so the zoo stepped in and began hand-feeding him. 

Honey wandered up shortly thereafter, and the two have become inseparable. The cub has developed a "special bond" with Honey as "they spend time exploring, wrestling and otherwise playing together." Kwanza is around four months old in the video, and is "a very robust and energetic young lion," according to the zoo. 

According to the Darling Downs Zoo, the white lion is not a separate species of lion nor is it an albino (there is pigment in their eyes, paw pads, and lips). "The color is due to a recessive gene, called a chinchilla gene, which is a color inhibitor," the zoo writes on the video page. "This can result in 'white' lions being blonde, near white, or even red!"

The Incredible Journey of Xiao Sa, a Little White Street Dog

Meet Xiao Sa, the Internet's newest darling.

Weighing less than 30 pounds, Xiao Sa was a stray dog who, upon being shown kindness, returned the gesture in full -- by accompanying the cyclists who fed her on a 1,100-mile trip to Lhasa, Tibet.

Xiao Sa's incredible journey began in Yajiang, Sichuan Province, when 22-year-old Zhang Heng, a student on a graduation bike tour across China, took pity on the little white street dog and decided to feed her. The small, simple gesture meant a lot to Xiao Sa, who proceeded to follow Heng and his team. They thought that after a few days the dog would give up, but she defied all expectations and ended up making the thousand-mile journey running alongside the cyclists.

For 20 days, Xiao Sa ran up and down mountainsides, braving rough terrain and fierce weather conditions, to complete a journey totaling 1,138 miles and climbing more than 13,000 feet in elevation. The only portion she did not run was a slope in Litang, where downhill speeds reach over 43 miles per hour. There Heng and his group constructed a cage for her to ride safely in. Apart from that, however, Xiao did it all on her own four paws.

Inspired by Xiao Sa's determination, Heng and his companions created a blog for her, which quickly garnered the attention of the Internet.

Upon arriving in Lhasa and posing with little Xiao Sa, Heng expressed delight that the former stray now has a home with him.

White Sox Player Pitches in to Save Dog Shot With Arrow

Even Cubbies fans will have to admit that White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle is a swell guy after what he and his wife did for a dog shot through the abdomen with an arrow. Shelby, a sweet sheltie mix, was discovered last week with an arrow sticking out of each side of her abdomen. She couldn’t sit down, and was losing lots of blood, according to KSDK. Death would have been inevitable if she didn’t have emergency surgery.

She got the surgery (3.5 hours worth, including removal of her spleen and repair of a badly ripped up small intestine), but it wasn’t cheap. Bills are nearing $3,000. Buerhie and his wife, Jamie, who live near where the dog was found in Illinois, were touched by the story, and will be footing the bill for medical expenses. That is super of them. Sure he earns a lot, but they didn’t have to do that.

Shelby is not yet out of the woods. It will be several more days until vets are sure she’ll pull through. Meanwhile, investigators are seeking information about whether this shooting was intentional or not. Her previous owners, who used to let her roam the streets and hadn’t reported her missing for the six weeks she had been gone, have given her up. If Shelby survives, she will be adopted out to what’s sure to be a very good and loving home. Sounds like Shelby could use some healing Dogster thoughts beamed her way.
