Caught on Camera! Jake’s New Year’s Resolution Too Much; Turns Him into a Blatant Thief

Sure, Jake may have curbed his begging a little, per his New Year’s resolution he reported on a few days ago. But he is now supplementing his caloric intake with a new technique: raiding the compost bucket. Last night I heard him breathing in an odd, hollow-sounding way as he tiptoed past me in the living room as I was reading from my new Kindle. He sounded like a short Darth Vader.

I looked over as he walked by and saw his mouth open to the point that it looked like a shark’s unhinged jaw. In his mouth he held what he surely considered the most fantastic treat ever: the gingerbread house my daughter and her friend Elton put together three weeks ago. It was from a Trader Joe’s kit, and it had been cute, but it didn’t taste very good so we used it purely as decoration, picking off little candy bits as the days of Christmas came and went. Last night, while starting  to dismantle our Christmas decorations, we decided it was time to put the gingerbread house in the compost bucket in our kitchen. Within 10 minutes it was in the stealthy jaws of our ceaselessly food-obsessed yellow Lab.

I had my camera close by and wanted to catch him red-jawed, as it were, but Jake wanted to keep moving toward the backyard with his quarry. So I called for Laura, who ran out of her room and grabbed Jake for his mug shot.

The compost bucket will be on the counter from now on.

I hope the New Year’s resolutions are going better in your household.

Win a Flip Video Camera from Dogster!

A few months back, Dogster designer Yuko Takahashi created an exclusive Dogster-themed Flip video camera for a summer photo contest we were running on our Facebook fanpage.

Well, the response was pretty darn amazing, and we received hundreds of photo entries featuring pups lounging in the summer sun.

Sooooo … if you were bummed you didn’t win last time, we’d like to invite you to enter the fall edition of the contest. And yes, we’re giving away another one of these limited-edition Flip cameras!

All you need to do is visit Dogster’s facebook page, hit the “Fall in Love” tab on the lefthand side of the page, and upload a photo of you and your pupster smoochin’ it up (come on, we KNOW you kiss your dog! We do!). Get friends and fam to vote up your pup — the most popular photo will bag one pupster one Dogster Flip cam.

The contest ends on Tuesday, Oct. 11, and we’ll announce the winner on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Win an Awesome Eyenimal Collar Camera!

Ever wonder what life looks like from your dog’s eye view? I recently snapped a Dogtek Eyenimal doggy video camera onto Jake’s collar in hopes of finding out. And boy did I find out!

Sure we got some fun footage of Jake meeting friends in the park, lapping up water, chasing the ball, and doing all those other stereotypical happy yellow Lab activities. But the folks at Eyenimal made a cute video like that already.

So here’s another kind of video, taken when I forgot the camera was rolling. Jake is SO busted!

Nice drool! Yes, that’s me at a computer in the final scene, headphones on, completely oblivious to the thief. The Jake-proof lock is usually on that cupboard door, but I was about to clean the kitchen, so he took advantage and became a free-range feeder.

How would you like your very own Eyenimal pet video camera? They’re really easy to use, and oh the things you’ll see!

DogTek and Dogster are teaming up to give away an Eyenimal collar cam (retail value: $129) to one lucky dog-blog reader. To enter for your chance to win, simply leave a comment below telling us the kinds of things you would like to see from your dog’s perspective if you had a doggy cam. If you think you’d see any sneaky shenanigans like Jake’s, be sure to mention this, too.

Deadline for entries is Wednesday, May 18, at 1 p.m. PST. We’ll do a random drawing for a winner (using random.org) and announce the winner Friday, May 20. Only one entry per household, please.

Have fun with this, and good luck!
