Dig This Video: Nathan the Hairless Dog Is a Dancing King

The Chinese Crested rescue dog has a great crew behind him, too. Your move, Kanye.

Have you ever seen a hairless dog flanked by three of his crew getting down to Madonna's "4 Minutes" in a rocking office chair?  

No? What's wrong with you? Have a look:

This dog is down with it, no? And his posse -- Crazy Hair on the left, Not Having It over the shoulder, and Eyebrows sort of hunched behind the rocking office chair, the way he does -- that's a fine-looking crew, dead ringers for about 100 people in 1984's Breakin', which is where all the great crews come from.

And Nathan, on the rocking office chair -- do you know that Nathan dances better than 85 percent of people at weddings, 95 percent of people at any given Red Lobster, and 100 percent of Ellen's studio audience? 

We know this because we Nathan and the Furious Three were featured on the show: 

Nathan's video has predictably struck a chord with Internet users -- "Hey, that dog has more game than me!" -- going viral and bringing scads of much-needed attention to the rescue Bald Is Beautiful, out of Greenville, SC, which takes in primarily hairless and small-breed dogs and finds them homes.  

Nathan, who is identified as a Chinese Crested on the Bald Is Beautiful website, was a hard case, the group reports Facebook. After his owner died in 2008, he was left in her home with all of her other dogs for a week. Another rescue took him in but failed to place the dog.   "He was moved to several homes over the next few years," writes BIB, "and apparently no one was willing or able to keep Nathan for more than a year before moving him on."

In 2011, Nathan ended up at Bald Is Beautiful. The group placed him with a foster home, where they discovered his fear of men. 

"Nathan was an unusual case in that he required ongoing training to address his issues. Part of this process includes changing behavior, but also minimizing triggers and helping the dog find success where it is possible."

After another failed placement, his foster mom realized "he was happier at her home than anywhere else he'd been before," so she adopted him. Nathan has been a joy ever since. 

As for his dancing, well, yeah, he's scratching his back. But it's so much more than that. 

"This dancing behavior is something he started on his own and now does on command for lots of praise from his mom, and treats, too," writes BIB.

And that crew? "Well, they know the drill. When Mom says, 'Wiggle it!' they all line up behind the green chair and wait. When it's over, everyone gets treats!"

PuppyFlix: for the Dog Video Junkie

I just can’t resist a photo or video of a cute dog or puppy. I mean really, who can? Well, now there’s PuppyFlix, the great new website with nothing but great dog videos. This is so great, I may have to start packing a lunch so I can look at these during my lunch hour.

A Video Tribute to John Unger and His Beloved Dog, Schoep

The touching story of John Unger and his dog, Schoep, moved one woman to create a video tribute to them. See it here -- and make sure to have a tissue ready.

The photos of John Unger cradling his senior dog and best friend, Schoep, during a water therapy session struck a chord so deep and primal, they immediately went viral. If there was ever a photo that conveys true, unconditional love in a single sublime image, it's this one:

The photo touched millions of lives, and when Schoep passed away in July, we all mourned with John Unger. One person was so touched by the story of Unger and Schoep that she decided to make a video tribute. Written from the point of view of Schoep to his human friend, Jennifer Wallick compiled photos of the two together and set them to Elton John's "Your Song."

It's bittersweet, so grab a tissue.

Rapper Young Calicoe Is Suspected of Dog Fighting After Viral Video

"Anyone want to fight some dogs?" Detroit rapper Young Calicoe says at the start of a video that went viral early this week, in which he shows off a number of Pit Bulls in cages at his house. "I hope we don't get indicted for that ... that Michael Vick type s***."

Well, good news: Yesterday his house was raided by Detroit police and Michigan Humane Society investigators, who took the dogs -- and some roosters, according to the Detroit Free Press.

In the homemade video, the rapper walks through his backyard and a shed full of cages, pointing out the Pit Bulls, some thin and whimpering, calling them "grand champions" and -- for the pups -- "champions in the making."  Don't forget the roosters.

"We fight them too! That's a grand champ right there," Young Calicoe says, gesturing to an anxious, caged rooster.  

Is Young Calicoe the dumbest rapper ever, posting this video? We don't know yet. The police investigation is ongoing. The video showed no clear evidence of dog fighting, just what looks like a terrible dog owner who keeps a lot of Pit Bulls in cages, doesn't feed or care for them enough (they looked thin and terribly sad), while boasting to America that they are grand champions -- and champions in the making, for the pups. 

Young Calicoe denies he fights dogs. We're not sure we believe him. 

Altered to the possible (probable) dog fighting by half the Internet after the video went viral, the police and Michigan Humane Society finally showed up at his door Wednesday. We're surprised Young Calicoe wasn't waiting on the porch for them. "We did seize a number of the animals from the property. They're being taken to the Michigan Humane Society," said Michigan Humane Society spokesman Kevin Hatman, as reported by the Free Press. "They're going to receive the best quality care that they can be given."

Young Calicoe responded as well. He tweeted: "Now that they have Healthy lovable dogs in custody, I just hope that they find nice homes for each and every one of them."

He also denied he was fighting dogs. Sort of. He wrote this on Twitter:

"If u find a video of me 'FIGHTING DOGS' PLEEEEZE LET ME KNO”

Twitter user @MissyB_06 then asked if the rapper had a video of him fighting dogs.

Young Calicoe shot back: "HELL NAAAW"

Although Michigan Humane Society spokesman Kevin Hatman said it's too early to tell whether Young Calicoe is fighting dogs, the Detroit Free Press hit the streets and started reporting. It found resident Robert Mackert, who said he runs an animal rescue operation nearby. 

"You hear dogs all through the night. We've made numerous police reports," Mackert told the Free Press. "It's an absolute nightmare around here." He said he also found dog carcases around the neighborhood, which he believes were victims of dog fighting. 

Fortunately, the police action on this has been pretty strong, because of the clamor over the viral video. It looks like a dog fighting operation, but appearances can be deceiving. If looking like a guy who fights dogs raises your stakes in certain dark corners of the rap world -- and don't think it doesn't -- then you can bet there's more than a few rappers are boasting about owning "grand champions" and "future grand champions."  If that was Young Calicoe's game, it worked. He's bigger than ever.

But be suspicious. We are. 

According to WXYZ-TV, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee said, "I want to thank the media for the attention that you brought to this because the humane treatment of animals ... is very important to us, and some of the conditions that we saw, without going into detail, gave a lot of credence to support what, I think, is going to be a prosecutable case going forward."

Heartbreaking Video: Loyal Labrador Braves Busy Los Angeles Roadway to Guard Dead Companion

A dog lies at her friend's side as the traffic whizzes by. If ever there was an image of the loyalty and love of a dog, this is it.

A vehicle on a busy Los Angeles area roadway struck a yellow Labrador retriever, who died on the street of head injuries. But the dog wasn't alone in the fading moments of life -- or after death. The golden's loyal canine companion was right there, steadfastly guarding her friend in the heavy morning commute. The black Lab stood and lay beside her fallen friend as traffic whizzed by, not wanting to leave to get to safer ground herself.

A passing Good Samaritan stopped, put up traffic cones around the heartbreaking scene, and called animal control. Officers took the heroic Labrador into their care, and named her Grace. She has no tags or microchip, and as of this morning, she is up for adoption. A worker at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center says Grace will go to "the first person who comes in and starts the paperwork on the animal."

At times Grace stood guard, at other times she lay beside her fallen friend. But she would not leave her companion's side.

Hmm, the adoption seems pretty quick. (The accident happened just a few days ago.) Who knows if their owners may be on vacation, or ill? And just giving Grace over to whoever fills out the paperwork first? She deserves better than this.

At least shelter workers say Grace would be best with someone who understands dogs, and can work with the one-year-old dog and show her compassion. Maybe they'll be pickier about a home than that shelter worker let on. From what I've been reading and seeing, they're showering her with lots of TLC.

Viral Video We Love: Double-Dutch Dog Blows Your Mind

A single jump rope isn't enough for this incredibly coordinated and energetic rescue dog.

How many tricks or commands does your dog know? I'm proud that Jake can sit, lie down (usually), stay, come, and react to "Out of the garbage!!!" pretty quickly. He doesn't really know tricks, because we taught him the shake-paws business, and he almost blinded people by offering his paw constantly in all the wrong situations. (For instance, you'd be lying on the couch, almost asleep, then a paw with stout nails comes scraping across your face. It basically meant "I want, please!" and he wanted all kinds of things -- always food-related -- and had no compunctions about showing it.) Untraining him was far more of a trick, but he eventually cooled off on the paw business.

When I saw the video below, however, Jake's repertoire suddenly seemed very minuscule. Check out this amazing dog who seems to absolutely love doing double-Dutch jump rope. (Some YouTube viewers have complained about the music. Just turn it down if you don't like it, because the doggy is great without it, too.)

I always like to know how dogs learn things like this, since my dog's "tricks" can fit into the palm of his scratch paw. Fortunately, the dog's owner, Samantha Valle, who travels around North America with Stunt Dog Productions, tells about the trick and the dog on her YouTube page:

"The dog is Geronimo and she's a two-year-old cattledog mix. I pulled her out of a pound in Missouri while I was performing there two summers ago. She was three months old. Mo's specialty is tricks. She loves to train tricks, but also has a knack for agility and frisbee. I have seven dogs total, all mixes of herding dogs, which are my favorite.

"This trick took five straight weeks until it was perfect for me to call complete. I practiced it every single day, several hours a day. Now, there are a lot of hours in a day, folks, and I like frequent breaks, although Mo wonders why we are stopping and not jumping all day long. ;) Mo will work all day, she loves to EAT!!

"This is the first time I've trained this specific trick, so it was all trial and error. There were no specific steps I really took that made a huge difference. All I can really remember doing is trying a bunch of different things, rewarding her small successes until the trick was complete.

"This trick is so amazing because of all the things going on at once. Think about it: She has to find that 'sweet spot' in the rope where she can jump in, wait for the perfect time to jump in, watch the board on the floor and the ropes at the same time so she knows where and when to jump in, then she must time the jump perfectly, land, and immediately find the rhythm of the ropes and jump. She's just not running and gunning it. She waits for the right time (which through hours of practice, she has figured out) and jumps in. The stick is there to keep her in the middle of the ropes. As i found out by teaching my other dogs to jump with just one rope, they all want to jump right on top of you or into you really closely.

"My vision for this trick is exactly how you see it now: A dog that runs and jumps into two ropes while staying in the middle as if she were jumping like a human. I'm happy with the end result. Mo is happy to jump, and I hope you all are happy to view her video and watch her having a good time."

Viral Video We Love: Tom the Helter-Skelter Dog

Just a little something to help you start your weekend with a wag.

Dogs rule. If you didn't already know that, check out this video of a very happy British dog named Tom as his fellow cheers him on toward the slide (or helter skelter, as they call it in the UK). Tom picked up the habit on his own, when a loved one went up without him.

And no worries about the dog being off leash at a playground: His owner says he is very good off leash, and of course, there were no children there at that time.

P.S. Anyone catch what his owner was saying around :07? "One goal, mind"? "One gold mine"? "Juan, go mind!"?

Look at his happy, smiling face afterward! Gotta love him! Tom's video has only been making the rounds since March 12, and already it has close to 200,000 views!

Thanks in Big Part to Dogsters’ Support, Tugg Will Star in His Video Series!

Dogster power! That’s what was behind 20 percent of the donations in a Kickstarter project to help Tugg star in a wonderful Internet video series. Without the support of Dogsters, Tugg would probably not be able to bring his story of hope and “woofing it forward” to the world.

You can read all about Tugg and the project in our interview with Blake Ovard, who, with wife Kim, took in Tugg when he was pretty  much given up as a goner because of terrible neglect/abuse.

Ovard is thrilled, and so grateful to Dogster readers. I asked him to let us know how the victory for Tugg’s video series funding unfolded in those last days, and if he contributed anything. Here he is:

We are so happy to be part of the Dogster family! Dogster really came through for the project! One of the neat things we can see on the control panel for the project, in addition to the amounts pledged, how many backers there are, and some cool graphs and charts, is where each backer found the project from. Dogster folks — the ones coming directly to the kickstarter project page from Dogster — made up nearly 20% of the dollars donated! That’s about $1,500! And, out of the 161 backers, 40 of them came directly from Dogster!

It came close to the wire, but we believe in Tugg’s message, so we knew we would get there! We actually came in slightly over the goal — 104% — at $8,329. Which is good because, our goal was the bare minimum we knew we would need for the whole process of creating the web series. I think we crossed over the goal line with slightly more than 24 hours to go.

Because Kickstarter is set up through Amazon payments, which processes all pledges as credit card purchases, by law, we were not able to pledge to the project. Just like if you have a shop, you aren’t allowed to buy something from yourself with your own credit card. We knew that from the beginning, so we did take that into account when we set up the project — that’s why the goal on Kickstarter was $8,000. Our actual budget is $10,000, but we decided that if we could get to $8,000, we would cover the additional expense ourselves. So, the whole time the Kickstarter project was running we were setting back part of each paycheck in anticipation for making it!

I think what helped at the end — and by end, I mean the last couple of days — is people started telling all of their friends about the project and encouraging them to get involved.

We received a lot of encouraging e-mails telling us how much everyone wuffed the idea of the web series, how much they want to be part of it, and how excited they were to know that there will be a web series with a positive message that everyone can enjoy. Plus Tugg and Dogster have some of the best fans in the world, and many of them e-mailed in the last 48 hours saying not to worry, it would happen!

It’s almost surreal for us at this point in time, since we just made our goal. While it is really exciting, it also a little intimidating … here we are with Tugg, who we do pupdates for every day, but now we have the honor of getting to share him on an even bigger scale, with more of the world. That means other creative people get to come on board with the project too.

So, soon we’ll have a whole set of people while we are filming, and a whole studio of animators animating, for a dog who is, well, our dog! Sure we’ve done little videos, but this is an almost overwhelming undertaking — but one we’ll be doing with huge smiles on our faces the whole time!

We should begin filming in the first and middle part of March, and hope to wrap by the beginning to mid-April. That leaves us about a month of postproduction. As for animation, it will start as soon as I send all the character sketches and the animation scripts to the animation studio. That should be in the next two weeks. We hope to have the first episode air by the end of May or first week in June. And the season will run for 15 weeks, maybe 16 if we decide to throw in a “blooper” episode.

Tugg is superexcited about the project — which is good, since he’s a superhero! He walked around all day clacking the clacker and yelling, “Roll ‘em!” and, “Cut!” Then he would sit in his director’s chair and act  like he was on the set of Ellen, talking to her about the series and his motivations for a particular scene.

Caught on Video: Dramatic Rescue of Dog Who Fell Through Ice in Colorado

Very unfortunate update below

A dog who bolted from his owner while on a walk near the Smith Reservoir in Lakewood, Colo., would probably be dead today if not for the heroic and dramatic rescue by local fire crew. A firefighter suited up in cold-water rescue gear crawled out and then semi-swam to the dog while hacking away at the ice so he could reach the dog. The dog, a Dogo Argentino named Max, was very glad to see his hero, and made a beeline for him.

“We’re blessed to have him here tonight,” Max’s owner, Michael Robinson, told 7NEWS. Max warmed up in the ambulance and is apparently back to his bouncy, energetic self.

His dramatic rescue was captured by a news helicopter.

Can you say “hero”?

(I was sorry to learn that Max ended up in the water because he was chasing a coyote. The coyote also fell into the reservoir, but very sadly, did not last against the elements. I wish that weren’t part of this story, but it is. Still the real story is that of the lengths these rescuers went to to save Max. RIP, coyote …)

Update 2:30 pm 2-8-12: I am really dismayed to have to bring you more bad news about this story. It started out as such a feel-good story, then I learned about the coyote drowning, and now it turns out that this morning Max bit the face of Denver TV anchor Kyle Dyer as she “tried to kiss/snuggle with the dog,” stated the animal control report, according to the Denver Post. Dyer is in fair condition at a local hospital.

The 85-pound dog is in custody of Denver Animal Care and Control, where he’s being detained pending investigation of the incident, and quarantined for 10 days to observe for signs of rabies and other illnesses. The dog reportedly was not up to date on rabies inoculations.

The firefighter who went into the frigid water to rescue Max was in the 9News studio with Max and his owner when the attack occurred. He once again went into rescue mode, this time helping Dyer. “It was definitely shocking, it was not how I envisioned my morning going,” Tyler Sugaski told the Denver Post. “It’s one thing getting called to a scene, but to be there right as it is happening, it’s different.”

NC Cop Who Was Caught on Video Kicking and Brutally Yanking Dog May Get Job Back

Remember back in 2007 when footage came out showing a North Carolina cop yanking and kicking the crap out of his Belgian Malinois patrol and narcotics detector dog? It was very disturbing to watch, although I’m sure much more disturbing to be the dog, Ricoh.

State Highway Patrol trooper Charles L. Jones was fired after public outcry. But a three-judge panel has just ruled that Jones should get his job back. Oh, and he should receive more than $200,000 in back pay.

I’m not including the video here because it will completely sicken most of my regular readers. (If you really want to find it online, you can.) But in case you don’t know the details of what Jones did, here’s a recap, via the Los Angeles Times.

“The video shows Jones wrapping Ricoh’s leash over a railing, then yanking and raising the dog by its neck so that only its back feet touched the ground. Jones then kicked Ricoh five times, causing the dog’s legs to swing out from under it. Jones was disciplining the dog after it refused to release a piece of fire hose given as a reward for alerting officers to the presence of narcotics.”

Okay, I need to take a deep breath and count to 10. I’ve spent a good part of the last year devoted to the research and writing of my upcoming book (it’s being published in about a month!) on military working dogs, and have spoken with dozens of military dog handlers and trainers, and witnessed countless hours of intensive training. There is no way anyone I dealt with would condone this kind of treatment of a dog because he didn’t want to give up his “paycheck.” What Jones did to Ricoh — who had been his dog for six years before the incident — is nowhere on the scale of “okay” in the military. I may get back to you later with the words of a highly regarded trainer who’s been in the military dog program for years, but that’s my two cents for now.

Instead of slinking away with his tail between his legs, Jones sued the state. Another state trooper backed him up, saying that dog handlers were trained to “use any means necessary to discipline” a dog to control him. Whoa, it’s not like this dog just ate a trooper’s face for lunch and got a swift punch or kick in the heat of the moment. The dog just didn’t want to give up his reward. There are plenty of other ways of dealing with this.

Oddly, the panel of judges in the latest development were simply upholding earlier decisions by a state Superior Court judge, an administrative law judge, and a N.C. personnel commission. (It was the state’s then-governor Mike Easley who fired Jones in 2007.)

The state Supreme Court may be asked to review the latest decision. But it looks like there’s a good chance Jones will really clean up. He has been working as a police officer in Apex, N.C., so he has been getting a paycheck. The extra $200,000 and getting his old job back could make him feel pretty invincible. If I were a law-enforcement dog for the N.C. Highway Patrol, I’d start sending out my resume right about now.

Video to Chill By: Very Happy Snowboarding Bulldogs

We were hoping to head to the Lake Tahoe area this long weekend and get in some skiing. My daughter had been looking forward to learning to snowboard, and it’s been a couple of years since we all hit the slopes. We’d take turns with Jake in the log cabin so he wouldn’t get lonely or go all termite on us.

But there’s been no snow for way too long, and the few slopes that are open will be crowded and have only manmade snow. So we’re foregoing it, as we did at Christmas. At least now that this video came my way I can live vicariously through these very happy snowboarding bulldogs. Go dogs, go!

A Fetching Video: Corgi Wants to Play Frisbee with Infant

This super-cute Corgi named Tuck seems to be trying to get his little buddy to participate in a game of Frisbee or fetch. Tuck doesn’t give up easily. I’m sure he’ll have the little fella trained in no time, though. I think I saw the the baby’s left hand moving in an “I want to throw that thing but I have no idea how” manner.

A few months back, Dogster designer Yuko Takahashi created an exclusive Dogster-themed Flip video camera for a summer photo contest we were running on our Facebook fanpage.

Well, the response was pretty darn amazing, and we received hundreds of photo entries featuring pups lounging in the summer sun.

Sooooo … if you were bummed you didn’t win last time, we’d like to invite you to enter the fall edition of the contest. And yes, we’re giving away another one of these limited-edition Flip cameras!

All you need to do is visit Dogster’s facebook page, hit the “Fall in Love” tab on the lefthand side of the page, and upload a photo of you and your pupster smoochin’ it up (come on, we KNOW you kiss your dog! We do!). Get friends and fam to vote up your pup — the most popular photo will bag one pupster one Dogster Flip cam.

The contest ends on Tuesday, Oct. 11, and we’ll announce the winner on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Video We Love: Jedi Dogs

Howdy, Dogsters! Today, our fearless blogger, Maria Goodavage, begins her month-long hiatus as she works her tail off to turn scores of notes from countless interviews into what is destined to be a fabulous book. (Ahem, I want a signed copy, Maria!)

We’re a supportive bunch here at Dogster HQ, and myself and a few other guest writers will be filling in for her through October’s end. But here’s the funny part: It’s Maria’s first day of freedom from her bloggy duties but she can’t quite stay away — the video above is one she sent me to share with you guys. She hearts you so!

Cute Video By Clever Dogster Flip Video Cam Winner

Last month Dogster/SAY held a contest on Facebook for a one-of a kind Dogster Flip video camera, and a Catster one, too. Even though the Flip cam company has been shuttered by Cisco Systems, the company that acquired the Flip startup, these cameras are still hot on the internet. And these two were especially sizzling, SAY’s very own Yuko Takahashi designed these custom cams. There are no others like them.

The contest winner, Jessica Trinh, made this well-edited and endearing piece about her adorable Golden, Chuppy. It stops abruptly at 57 seconds, in the middle of Colbie Caillat’s sweet song, and we want more! Jessica, when is Part 2?

We think it’s great she was so excited about the prize and got pretty savvy with it quickly, and wanted to share her video. If any of you have Flip cams hanging around collecting dust (I am speaking to myself here…), her piece might provide some inspiration to give it another whirl.
