Dogster’s Style Picks of the Week: Workout Edition

Now that we’re nearly two weeks into January, how are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions? Yikes! That bad, huh? Don’t beat yourself up. Changes are difficult to make.

One of the most challenging resolutions to keep up with is the one we make to work out more. I know I struggle with this one all the time, but I find it helps to invest in the right equipment to get the job done. Wanting to keep my precious pooch happy and healthy certainly helps, too!

Do you and your pup need a bit more motivation? Perhaps this week’s Dogster Picks will help you reach your goals.

These stylish items will help you and your pup stay healthy.

1. Gold’s Gym Rubber Dumbbell Dog Toys — Provide a powerful playtime workout for your pooch with these rubber dumbbells by Gold’s Gym.

2. Gold’s Gym Tank Top — Seeing your dog in this adorable tank might just be the extra kick in the pants you need to head to the gym.

3. GoPet Treadwheel — Some of you city dwellers probably don’t have the yard space to let your dog run around as much as he needs to. This GoPet Treadwheel might be the solution.

4. The Dog Walker’s Dumbbells — These brilliant weight-adjustable dumbbells combine an upper-body workout with dog walking. Genius!

5. Pet Pedometer — Do you have a dog who needs to drop some serious pounds? This pedometer will help you track your pet’s activity so you can ensure he’s getting all the exercise he needs.

6. H2O for K9 Water Bottle — When you take your dog for a run, don’t forget to bring him water! This stainless-steel option comes with a bowl and belt clip, making it the perfect to-go bottle.

7. Reebok’s Premier ZigFly Running Shoe — Nothing is more important than great running shoes. The unique sole on this pair by Reebok will wake up your workout.

8. Stella McCartney for Adidas Run Perf 7/8 Ti Running Pants — I adore the way designer Stella McCartney combines function with fashion. Her running pants are a must for the gal who loves to look good while she gets in shape.

9. Sweaty Betty Athlete Tank — Sometimes body-clinging workout tanks can make you feel a bit self-conscious. This nonclingy, longer-length tank creates a slimmer silhouette for a more comfortable experience.

10. Lululemon Back on Track Jacket — This jacket is designed to keep you dry on early morning runs, and has tons of other cool features that you didn’t know you wanted, but are so excited you have!

Dogster’s Picks of the Week: Holiday Party Edition

Who’s ready for Christmas?! I’m … not. But I’m working my butt off this week to get there. With nearly all of my shopping done, I finally have some time to figure out what my dog and I will be wearing for Christmas dinner.

This year, we’ve been feeling inspired by all of the great vintage fashion floating around, so we’re going a little retro/classic. Have no idea what you’ll be wearing to dinner? This week’s Dogster Picks ought to help you figure that out!

You and your pup can look cute in these stylish holiday outfits!

1. Kettle Corn Dress in Sunset — I’m a big fan of Mad Men‘s incredible vintage style — who isn’t? I plan on looking Betty Draper fabulous in this lovely dress.

2. Super Smoky Strand — Super smoky and super sexy. This necklace will look just as amazing on Christmas evening as it will on New Year’s Eve.

3. Dalmatian Oversized Faux Fur Coat — It’s a little Cruella De Vil, but puppy slaying aside, am I the only one who thought she had a great sense of fashion?

4. Frenchy Platform Pump — I love the bow-like detail on these hot pumps. It’s like a present on your feet!

5. Santa Baby Dog Duvet — My dog likes to get comfy while we open presents. This year, he’ll be getting comfy on this Molly Mutt dog duvet (but he doesn’t know it yet. shhh .. )

6. Orbee-Tuff Holiday Bulb Dog Toys — Keep your pooch entertained while you’re off celebrating with these chewy and adorable light bulb toys.

7. Urban Stripe Scarf — What’s more classic than a candy cane scarf? Your dog is going to get plenty “How cute!” comments when he arrives in this.

8. Buffalo Check Collar — Looking for super stylish holiday wear? Look no further than this buffalo check poinsettia flower collar.

9. Bocce’s Bakery Treats — Just like everyone else, your dog will want some holiday treats. Keep them healthy with Bocce’s Bakery treats in gift-worthy packaging.

10. Martha Stewart Snowflake Sweater — There’s something very retro about holiday sweaters. Stay with the vintage theme by dressing your dog in this snowflake sweater.

Dogster’s Picks of the Week: Technology Edition

Stylish stuff for your tech-geek dog

In today’s tech-savvy world, I’m finding that not only do I have to be up-to-date with the latest gadgets, my dog does too! We recently visited a Silicon Valley dog park, and I swear he kept giving me the “Why don’t I have one of those?” look.

If you and your dog are looking to get geek-chic together, check out some of our favorite and fashion-forward tech gadgets.

1. Pet’s Eye View Digital Camera — Clip this cool camera to your dog’s collar and let him document his day. Who knows — maybe your pooch will be the next Ansel Adams!

2. PetHub Link Scruff Tag Collar — This is one of the smartest collars I have ever come across. As well as having an inscription with your personal website, this tag can be scanned by any smartphone to send your dog’s rescuer all of his most crucial information, including a list of numbers to reach you at.

3. Aikiou Interactive Dog Feeder — Your little tech-savvy pooch needs constant stimulation when you’re not home. Keep him away from your devices by leaving him entertained with this food-hunting activity feeder.

4. iPood Dog Tank — Who knew the expression “I Poo’d” could be so cute? I have no doubt this simple and well-designed dog tank would make Steve Jobs smile.

5. Go Dog Go G3 Fetch Machine — Busy obsessing over your new iPad? Let technology take over your game of fetch (just until you’re done downloading all of your favorite apps).

6. iPawd Dog Toy — Include your dog in your family’s social network with his very own iPawd toy. Just make sure you monitor his Facebark usage.

7. Dog-Shaped Ear Buds — These adorable ear buds are a must have for any dog-loving techster. At $12, I think I’ll be stocking up on these for the holiday season.

8. Glad for Plaid Laptop Bag — Looking for a chic and stylish way to transport your laptop? This cute bag from ModCloth will earn you nonstop compliments while keeping your computer safe.

9. Sunny Is Power Solar Travel Charger — My off-the-charts usage of my tech devices often leaves me with a dead battery before the day is through. From now on, I’ll be carrying one of these solar power chargers for a few extra hours of much-needed battery life.

10. La Sardina Lomography Camera — Yes, your phone probably has a pretty awesome camera, but real photogs will want a cool camera to snap pictures of their pups. This cool camera from Lomography combines your flair for fashion with your love for photography.

Dogster’s Picks of the Week: Travel Edition

Like many people, my family lives all over the world. Although I wish they lived much closer, I love that I get to travel to so many great cities to visit them.

I’m not the kind of person who can tolerate spending holidays and vacations away from my dog, so most of the time, he jetsets around the world with me. You should see his doggy passport! Having accumulated countless air miles, we know a thing or two about flying together. We hope you enjoy our picks and tips!

1. Chunky Yellow Cable Sweater — Airplanes often get chilly. I know I’m constantly reaching to shut the air vent. If you’re cold, chances are your pup might be, too! Make sure you pack a cozy sweater in his carry-on. A warm doggy is a happy doggy.

2. Pet Ego Sport Wagon Carrier — Beyond being an attractive piece of luggage, this stylish travel carrier by Pet Ego comes with a comfortable travel strap you’ll be glad you have while you’re standing around waiting to board. Most importantly, it’s airline approved.

3. The Dog Lover’s Companion Travel Guide — This incredible collection of travel books gives you insider information on hundreds of off-leash areas, parks, hiking trails, camping areas, and beaches, all rated from a pooch’s perspective on a one-to-four-paw scale. Check out the site for a guidebook to the city you’re traveling to. [Editor's Note: Dogster's own Maria Goodavage wrote the California edition!]

4. Airplane Dog Bed — You definitely won’t be taking this on board, but this airplane dog bed is a fun way for you and your dog to remember all of your travel days together. It’s a must have for dogs who love to jetset.

5. Silicone Travel Bowls — Flying can be just as dehydrating for your dog as it can be for you. Don’t leave home without travel bowls for your pooch. These collapsible silicone bowls are a cinch to pack and take up very little space.

6. Leather Pet Passport Cover — Traveling overseas? Your dog will need all his vaccination records and important travel documents. Keep them organized in a beautiful leather pet passport cover from Lila Paws.

7. Amrita Cardi — Flying isn’t the most comfortable way to travel, so I like to keep myself as comfy as possible by wrapping up in a big soft sweater. This wrap cardigan will have you looking and feeling cozy in style.

8. Hideo Jellybean Trolley — Sometimes when you get off of a long flight, it’s not always easy to tell which suitcase is yours at baggage claim. Spot your stuff immediately with this bright and fun Hideo suitcase in jellybean green.

9. Perry Travel Pillow — Catch some zzzzs while your pooch is snoozing while resting your head and neck on this pop-print pillow.

10. Maxi Tank Dress — In all of my traveling experience, nothing is more relaxing and easy to wear on board than a cotton maxidress. You’ll feel like you’re wearing pajamas without actually wearing pajamas. They look fantastic layered with a cardigan wrap like the one above.

What are your favorite travel tips?

Dogster’s Picks of the Week: Halloween Edition

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate with my dog. Every year, I dress him up in something unique and we head out for treats and tons of ooohs and awwws. Come to think of it, I’m not sure who loves the attention more. Luckily, I have a dog who doesn’t mind sporting a Halloween costume. In fact, he truly seems to enjoy it. If you’ve got a pooch who loves to dress up for Halloween, check out some of this year’s favorites.

Have a safe and Happy Howl-o-ween!

1. Animal Planet Triceratops and Raptor Dog Costume — Whether your dog is an herbivore or a carnivore, he’s going to be the fiercest-looking dog in Jurassic Bark. I highly recommend checking out all of Animal Planet’s dog costumes. They’re incredible!

2. Indiana Bones — Is your dog the adventurous type? Then perhaps he should be dashing through the Halloween dog parade as Indiana Bones the thrill-seeking dog!

3. Mermaid Costume — This one is perfect for the lady dogs out there who want to stand out in sequin scales. Your little mermaid will love the under-the-sea crab toy that comes with the costume.

4. Banana Split Pet Costume — Complete with three scoops of ice cream and a cherry on top, this costume is the way to go if you have the sweetest dog around.

5. Chef Dog Costume — Dressed up as Chef Boyar-dog, your pooch will look like he has what it takes to be crowned the next Top Chef.

6. Martha Stewart Devil Dog Costume — Martha Stewart never disappoints with her lovely and well-made dog costumes. Your little devil will definitely stay warm all night long with this head-to-tail costume.

7. Iguana Costume — If your dog is kind of an odd animal, then perhaps this iguana costume would be fitting. It’s a bit pricey, but has some beautiful plush details.

8. Party Hounds Smoking Jacket Costume — Your dog is handsome and debonair and is constantly asked for play dates at the dog park. Yes, he’s a ladies’ man, and no other costume would be more appropriate than this Hefner-esque look. The pipe toy is a bonus!

9. Ghosts Glow-in-the-Dark Dog Tee — If dressing up your dog in a costume just isn’t your thing, but you’d still like to celebrate the holiday in a fun way, Halloween dog T-shirts are always a fun and simple option. Find a cool one that glows in the dark, like this one from Muttropolis, for an extra cool effect.

10. Chia Pet Costume — There’s still plenty of time to make your own dog costume if you’re the DIY type. Remember to keep it fun and get creative! This Chia Pet costume is bursting with creativity. Be sure to follow the link for the “how to.” [Editor's Note: This costume was made by Dogster member Kitai!]

6. Coiled Snake Earrings — Think of them as your favorite go-to gold hoops with a twist.

7. Flexi Fashion Retractable Belt Leash in Snake — Normally I steer clear of retractable leashes, but the sleek snake print on this one proves that plastic retractable leashes don’t have to be ugly.

8. Snakeskin iPhone 4 Case — If you’re the type who likes to change your smartphone case seasonally, this snakeskin case is so right now.

9. Fu Fu Fashion’s Snake Print Cotton Jersey Dog Shirt — Looking to put your pup in head-to-tail python? This shirt will have your dog covered, and the touches of pink will keep her looking playful.

Dogster’s Picks of the Week: Back to School Edition

Dogsters, I’m really happy to introduce a new feature on the dog blog. Christine Martinez, of the terrific blog Miles to Style, will be bringing her fun and hip sense of style to us every Thursday. We’re going to learn all about great new products I know you’ll love. I’m going to get the USB hub dog from her list this week. There’s nothing like plugging the ol’ keyboard into a dog’s paw, I always say.

And now, here’s Christine! Enjoy! (And welcome aboard, Christine!)

-Maria Goodavage

Hi, Dogsters! My name is Christine Martinez and I’m super excited to be spreading my love for fashion and cool products with the incredible Dogster community. Earlier this year, my gorgeous Mi-Ki, Miles, inspired me to start a blog called Miles to Style. It’s our own little spot on the web to share our favorite pet and people fashion finds. Little did we know we had fans over at Dogster HQ who were kind enough to invite us here to share what we love with all of you. Miles and I couldn’t be happier to be teaming up with Dogster to share our Picks of the Week!

Even though I’ve been out of school for quite some time, September is always back to school month for me. At this point in my life, “back to school” means getting myself reorganized by picking up new office supplies and changing out my casual summer wardrobe for something more sophisticated.

For my dog, it means transitioning back into doggy daycare after lots of vacation time with me. And naturally, I want to send him off looking his best and well-equipped with new treats and toys. No matter what this time of the year means to you, I hope these cool products get you and your dog out of your laissez-faire summer mindset and ready to head back to school (or work!) in style.

1. Beast of Burden Dog Duvet — Written in perfect penmanship, and of course, within the lines, this dog duvet probably won’t teach your dog to read or write, but he’ll have a comfy place to snooze during class.

2. Harry Barker Varsity Tennis Ball Set — Think your dog has what it takes to make it to the pros after graduation? Make sure you train him daily with these varsity tennis balls.

3. Puppia Middle School Uniform — Don’t fret over what you dog will wear on the first day. This handsome school uniform with button-up collar will ensure your dog is voted best-dressed by the end of the year.

4. Smart Dog Jerky — Your dog won’t be able to show off his best tricks on an empty stomach. Make sure you pack these nutritious Smart Dog Jerky strips to keep him focused and functioning at his best.

5. Shop this look at Madewell — Casual. Cool. Sophisticated. Chic. Just a few of the adjectives the rest of the dog moms will use to describe you when you drop off your dog looking like this.

6. Mascot Old School Repp Collars — Perhaps your dog will never get an A in the art of following basic commands, but at least he can look smart in these preppy collars from Mascot.

7. DNA Dog Toy — You tell your friends daily what a genius your dog is. They may actually start to believe you when it turns out his favorite toy is a DNA strand.

8. USB Hub Dog — Miss your dog while you’re at work? Keep him in mind him while powering all of your devices with this USB Hub Dog.

9. Baggu Backpack — This cool backpack is large enough for all of your daily essentials, and has a small pouch in the front for poop bags, toys, and treats. It’s a win/win for you and your dog. Bonus: It comes in all of your favorite colors!

10. Hand-bound Journals with Neon Pages — Old-school as it may sound, some people still like to write notes, phone numbers, and messages in a notebook. Gasp! If you’re one of these folks, you’re going to love jotting grocery lists and doggy playdate information in your neon-page notebook.

How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition)

How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition)How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend, an informal, friendly guide by The Monks of New Skete, is really two books in one: a step-by-step training manual and a philosophical discussion of the spiritual benefits of owning a dog. The Monks, who support their community in upstate New York by breeding and training German shepherds, reveal a profound devotion to all breeds in this detailed guide to every imaginable aspect of dog ownership. They cover it all: naming the puppy, training with eye contact and jingling keys, establishing the best sleeping arrangements, even dealing with pet loneliness. Owners are advised to think of themselves as the dog's alpha figure, to train with praise instead of punishment, and to beware of becoming the dog's maid or doorman. Throughout, the authors reflect on the deep spiritual connection possible between humans and dogs. Generations of dogs have been trained with the bestselling 1978 edition of this book. With this update, the Monks are bound to gain many new fans--happy humans and obedient canines alike. With modesty and generosity, the Monks offer an extensive list of other helpful books about dogs, as well as a useful appendix of American Kennel Club titles and terms. --Judy Fireman
