Have a Bubbly Weekend!
Woot! It’s almost the weekend!
I love this photo. It’s so Jack Russell terrier! And speaking of JRTs, it will be interesting to see whether Uggie, the Jack Russell who stole the show in the enchanting movie The Artist, will appear on stage with Billy Crystal during the Oscars on Sunday. Word was that they’d be sharing the spotlight during the awards show, but a couple of days ago it was announced that Uggie had not even been invited. Seems like a bad PR move if that’s true, but Uggie won’t care. He’ll be just as happy to watch from the comfort of his living room.

Awesome Weekend Dog Pics For Your Viewing Pleasure
My 14-year-old daughter, Laura Altair Hanson, has been emailing me dog pics for months now, in hopes that I might be able to use some for Dogster. So far they’ve either been too small or just a bit — well, unusual. (There are only so many morphed dog-birds one can look.)
But this week she sent me a bunch that I knew would work beautifully for our Dogster weekend send-off. As it turns out, they’re all from the free iTunes app, Backgrounds. You can use them as the wallpaper for your iPhone. Or you can just sit back and enjoy some awesome dogs right here, in the comfort of your Dogster dog blog. Happy weekend!

What Do You Do About Your Dog if You’re Raptured Away This Weekend?

I’d scheduled a birthday lunch with my mother-in-law for May 22, but I recently learned that there may be a little conflict: Judgment Day is predicted for May 21. I hate it when that happens!
This could change our plans a little, if Judgment Day pundits like Oakland minister Harold Camping are right. There are all kinds of renditions of what may happen tomorrow on the Day of Reckoning. Among them:
FYI Rev. Camping didn't get the Rapture date right last time. He has high hopes for this one.• This is the kindest and gentlest of the predictions. Jesus will come, and the saved are going straight to heaven. (FYI, the event is called the Rapture, because if you’ve committed your life to Jesus and he personally sends you to heaven, you’re probably going to be pretty rapturous.) In this scenario, the rest of us may remain here on earth, slogging away at our tedious lives, noticing nothing different except, perhaps, that there are more empty seats at church. The world may or may not end in October.
• Earthquakes will tear the world asunder. That’s what Camping predicts. The saved (a mere 2 percent of the world’s population, apparently) will go straight to heaven. Everyone else, the other place.
• The saved will go to heaven (this seems to be a common theme), and the rest of us will be having a very, very bad time on Earth on May 22 and henceforth.
But why am I writing about this on Dogster? Because some people who are planning for the Rapture are also making plans for their pets.
The idea is that dogs don’t go to heaven (this is not the kind of heaven I’d want to be in), so if you love your dog, you’re going to want to make sure he gets a new home.
What’s a dog to do if his owner has been Raptured away?
If his owner had signed up for post-Rapture care with the atheists at Eternal Earth-Bound Pets-USA, the dog should be OK. According to the company’s website:

Each additional pet at your residence will be saved for an additional $20.00 fee. A small price to pay for your peace of mind and the health and safety of your four legged and feathered friends
The service claims to have representatives in 28 states now, and they’re standing by to take your dog. As of about a week ago, the organization told the Washington Post it had some 250 clients.
Some fine print to be aware of, should you sign up:
If subscriber loses his/her faith and/or the Rapture occurs and subscriber is not Raptured (aka is “left behind”) EE-BP disclaims any liability; no refund will be tendered.
Is this a joke? According to the company’s website, absolutely not.
This is a serious offer to our Christian friends who believe in the Second Coming and honestly care about the future of their pets after the Rapture occurs.
As for my plans on May 22, I think I’ll wait until Sunday morning to buy my mother-in-law a gift, just in case.

This weekend: No-kill, reptile smuggling and rehabbing fight dogs
I’ve been producing this event for ten years now, but it’s actually in its thirteenth year. Last year, we started using streaming Internet radio instead of text-based chat, although we run a real-time chat room so listeners can talk with each other, make comments, and ask the guest questions.
We’re kicking it off tonight with an interview with Nathan Winograd, one of the most controversial and inspiring figures in the no-kill movement. I’ll be interviewing him about the raging-hot issue of laws that give rescue groups the right to take dogs and cats slated for death from shelters. Laws like California’s 13-year-old Hayden Law, the recently passed Delaware shelter standards law, and the current battle over proposed shelter access laws in New York State, including Oreo’s Law — a topic I know many of you here have strong opinions on.
If you want to ask questions on that topic, be sure to drop by the chat, or post them here. And yes, they do have to be on that topic — I know there are lots of other issues you might want to question our guest on, but this is the one we’re looking at now.

Then on Sunday at 8 PM Eastern, we’ll be welcoming Andrew “Roo” Yori and Marthina McClay to talk about their dogs Hector and Leo, two of best-known of all the former Vick dogs. Cindy will be joining them, talking about her own fight-bust rescue dog, Cleo — less famous, but no less awesome!
Chat Month runs every weekend this month, and we’ll be welcoming some of our Pet Connection team, including Dr. Tony Johnson on the topic, “Sewing tiny sequinned evening gowns for tarantulas,” and Dr. Robin Downing on “How to give your pets the really good drugs.”
Okay, I made those topics up. But they really will be guesting with us!

Weekend open thread: Pet Connection gives you the floor
Good morning! Gina’s out of town, and you all know what that means by now, right?
Rawley Deerhound told me this morning when he woke up that he was very upset that he was too young to play in last year’s Puppy Bowl, and too old for this year’s. I told him I really thought that basketball was probably more his game, but he was not consoled.
I didn’t have the heart to mention that the Puppy Bowl is only for shelter dogs!
I’ll confess additionally that I’ve never in my life seen a football game and only know who’s in this year’s Super Bowl because the Wisconsin Humane Society keeps making these agonizingly cute videos with their “Packer Pups.” Like this one (couldn’t get embed to work!).
Who can resist that? And all those puppies are available for adoption. Genius campaign, and thanks to the Internetz, pretty much free, too.
So, how do you all feel about the Puppy Bowl now that it’s gone all sponsored and fancy?
I saw the first one, and it was a very different event then! This is what I posted at the time (2005):
Is anyone else watching the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet?
This is the best thing I’ve ever seen on TV, ever.
I can just see them, though, trying to pitch it:
Producer: OK, so, what it is, is a big box painted to look like a football field, full of different kinds of puppies playing.
Animal Planet Executive: OK, what do they do?
Producer: Well, they play. And nap. And poop.
Executive: OK, but what else do they do? Is there a voiceover?
Producer: No, just the camera on the puppies playing. And sometimes a guy comes in and pooper scoops.
Executive: No, really.
Producer: Really. It’ll be great.
Executive: Seriously. What’s the show about?
Producer: Puppies. Playing. For hours. You know, like the Christmas Eve shows that are just a fireplace burning while Christmas music is playing? It’s like that, only it’s puppies.
Executive: Puppies.
Producer: Yes. And we have instant replay, too.
Good times.
Other than watching (or not) the Puppy Bowl, what are you all doing this weekend? Watching the Super Bowl, or boycotting it because the NFL let Michael Vick play again? Pretending it doesn’t exist and taking advantage of all the extra parking available at the mall?
